Love CAN stand the test of time and some beautiful stories have proven that along the years. When it comes to taking any kind of advice, one should naturally turn to role models who have succeeded in setting examples for the rest of us. At Esposa, we sell the most beautiful wedding dresses in Lebanon, and we love seeing the love stories we set off last forever. In order to help our beloved brides, we met with Soha and Michel, a couple that has been married for 72 years and asked them about their “secrets” for a lasting and successful married life. Here are the secret recipe they revealed to us while recalling the pillars of their solid relationship: 1- Were you sure of each other when you decided to get married?
Soha: We were very young when we met and decided to take the leap of marriage. When you’re young, you’re mainly driven by emotions and passion. However, from the day I met Michel, I knew he was the one. I’m not sure words can describe that feeling – I guess when you’ll meet that person - the one - you’ll just know.
2- How did your love evolve along the years? Can you still call it love?
Obviously the hot romance of the first marriage years doesn’t last forever. With time, you learn to realize and appreciate that love gets deeper with the years; it never fades away, it just evolves into something more solid, less volatile. Your spouse becomes your best friend, your confident, your supporter, your relief, and there’s nothing more beautiful than having a partner like that for life. 3- Marriage life is obviously hard. Did you ever think of quitting at some point?
Quitting or divorcing was never an option for us. Of course we argued many times but then again, nothing comes easy in life and good things are worth fighting for. We knew we were on the same team and that we had no choice but to find solutions together for our problems. Everything can be solved in life through communication and understanding. 4- What are your tips for overcoming bad days of marriage?
It’s very important to keep in mind that marriage is not a fairy tale and that no marriage is ideal. Each one of us has good and bad days, good and bad habits, strengths as much as weaknesses; it’s always good to remember that and to focus on the big picture, on the fact that we are in this together on the long run and that we have to work hard, together, to make it work. Remembering all the good reasons why you married this person in the first place can be enough to completely erase a bad day from your mind! 5- How do you think a couple can keep his relationship exciting or interesting?
Marriage passes by various stages and each has its own challenges. While the wife tends to lose herself in the role of the mother and the man in the many responsibilities of providing for his family, the couple forgets about each other and slips in a daily hectic routine, unwillingly killing the flame they once had. We’re not saying routine is a bad thing, it can sometimes create healthy discipline in a couple and a feeling of stability but it definitely needs to be shaken once in a while. It’s always good to do new things, go on trips, surprise each other with small gestures like an unexpected romantic dinner. Feeling young and alive is crucial for a couple, and that’s what people tend to forget. Even if we become parents or grandparents, we always deserve to feel romance, to feel pampered, and to remind ourselves that a couple’s relationship always comes first and needs constant attention. 6- What is the best piece of marriage advice you can give for young couples?
Lower the bar, marriage is not a fairy tale but it’s a rewarding journey definitely worth living. Communicate; it’s the key to any successful marriage. Take care of your relationship, it won’t grow and flourish alone. Grow together but apart as well; growing as separate individuals contributes to a much more successful couple life. Marriage is not a contest; never try to score, rather accomplish together. Learn to compromise, to adapt, to bend, but never break! So here you go Esposa brides!
